Explore Beaune

Beaune, a beautifully preserved and restored medieval town, is considered the capital of the Burgundian wine country.

The Hospices de Beaune (also known as the Hotel-Dieu) has become an icon of Burgundy, with its tiled roofs and Flemish architecture. It houses Rogier van der Weyden's Flemish masterpiece 'The Last Judgment.'

Lunchtime

... in or near Beaune

Possible lunch spot just north of Beaune (as described in Fodor's)

AU BOIS DE CHARMOIS Rte. de la Serree, Nuits-St-Georges. Phone: 03-80-61-04-79. Three kilometers out of Nuits-St-Georges, on the way toward Meuilley, is this marvelous little inn serving local fare at great prices - a three-course lunch is only EUR9.50. An even less expensive menu is available at weekday lunch. It's especially pleasant to sit in the courtyard under the ancient trees, though even on chilly, gray days the small dining room is full of good cheer. MC, V

Friday afternoon 18 October
Tour the Cote d'Or area of Burgundy

Possible stops:

Clos de Vougeot: The chateau was constructed in the 12th century by Cistercian monks. Its huge 13th-century grape presses are marvels of medieval engineering.

Chateauneuf-en-Auxois: A tiny hilltop town that takes you back to the Middle Ages. The chateau commands a breadth of view over rolling farmland as far as the eye can see.

Highly recommended dining Ma Cuisine in Beaune: "A great little restaurant housed in what used to be a bookstore, and before that, a stable." ... "Wine merchant Pierre Escoffier has teamed up with his wife, chef Fabienne, to create a hot bistro, decorated with simple and lovely taste. A three-course menu is $17. Great wine list backed by 20,000 bottles.'
